Just announced – Norwich is to be in the first wave of 20 locations selected by the Department of Culture Media and Sport to develop its own locally-run TV station.

JMS was amongst those supporting this bid as we felt the idea that Norwich might NOT be part of the Government’s first wave of pioneer local stations would be unthinkable.

Naturally conurbations such as Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Newcastle were selected. But alongside all of them Norwich is a city with a history of speaking for an entire region, plus a proud tradition of BBC and Independent Broadcasting, where current employment in the creative industries is 20% higher than the norm.

The outline proposal calculated that the Government would provide funding to each selected local TV contractor of a minimum of £500,000 a year for 3 years, but those initial thoughts will now be subject to a further round of detailed discussions.
